St Just Skate Park and Recreation Ground
The St Just Skate Park and Recreation Ground Committee formed in early 2018, after a public meeting attended by over 60 people, including many youngsters, following the removal of the skate equipment from the recreation ground in St Just. We formed under the umbrella of the Land’s End and Peninsula Community Land Trust, which enabled us to lease the corner of the recreation ground from Cornwall Council in order to build the skate park.
We held local fundraisers with mobile skate ramps in both the primary and secondary schools and canvassed local skaters and scooter users to help us with the design. We applied for grants from The Lottery and Sport England and received many generous donations from the local community.
At last in autumn 2021, with all the funding finally in place, Canvas Spaces started work on the build. The new skate park opened in July 2022. Since then it has been enjoyed by many of you and we still have a bit more to do! We now have the funding in place for floodlights, that will be on a sensored timer, so will only go on when the parks is in use and will have an overriding cut off time of 9pm. This will mean that in those long winter months, we will all be able to use the skate park after school and work if it’s not raining.
We regularly offer beginners coaching sessions and hold open days with free comps for all ages and abilities. Keep an eye out on the st_just_skatepark instagram or email stjustskateparkappeal@gmail.com for more information on these.
The Skate Park & Recreation Ground Committee are now setting their sights on the rest of the park. We will be putting together a preliminary funding bid this year so please do share any ideas you have by contacting us on the insta or email – or better still join the committee! We are looking for enthusiastic new members ready to deliver the next phase of the project. Currently Cornwall Council still manage the rest of the recreation ground, but together we are looking at ways in which we might lease the land from them, as we did for the skate park.
We are so delighted that so many people are having so much fun at the new skate park- and so proud that as a community we have raised the money for a top class facility in St Just for our young people to enjoy.
Please help keep it tidy and pick up any litter if you see it and put it the bins, thank you.
